How to make Lipo Battery USB Charger/Adapter for Phone, MP3, etc.

In this video, I show you how to make a device that uses a LiPo (Lithium Polymer) battery to output USB power. You can use this device for charging/running any USB devices, e.g. cell phones, MP3 players, fans, lights, etc. This assumes you have the USB cable for your device already. This solution uses a 5 volt UBEC to convert the power from your LiPo to the right voltage used by USB. This is better than other solutions that use 9-volt batteries because LiPos have more capacity, they can be easily recharged and they can charge your device faster than a 9-volt.

Materials Required:
-LiPo battery (2 cell minimum, more cells are OK)
-male and female connectors for battery
-5 Volt UBEC
-female servo lead
-USB type A female connector

Tools Required:
-wire strippers
-multimeter or volt-ohm meter
-soldering iron or gun (optional)
-solder and heat shrink (optional)

LiPo Recommendation: Make sure to use a LiPo with sufficient capacity to charge your device. I suggest you get something that is at least 4 times the capacity of the source device. For example, if your device is a 1-cell 500mAh battery, you need 4 times capacity (4 x 500 = ) 2000 mAh capacity. Divide by number of LiPo battery cells, e.g. 2000 / 2 = 1000 mAh LiPo capacity.

Note: Devices like iPhone 4s require a special 2V voltage to the center 2 USB pins, so this charger will not work for those devices. I suggest you try a Minty Boost kit for special devices like this.

Also, make sure not to run your LIPO battery down too low. Most LIPOs don’t like to go down below 3.2 volts per cell. I recommend using a LIPO alarm, available on Ebay for about $3. Check out http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=l…
