Background: I am 67; recently retired; getting back to golf after 30 years; little experience with tech products – no iPhone or iPad; no available knowledgeable help; seeking the “silver bullet” to lower my golf score (22 index).Research: Of the various distance devices used by the ladies with lower indexes who I golf with, the 76-year-old lady with a Garmin Approach G6 was most satisfied: her children set it up for her. Reviews indicated the latest version G8 (has a larger screen than the G6: shows the same distances as the G6) is superior to the G6 and G7: no nearby stores carried the G8 or the G7 to demo.Purchase: Sunday, May 11, 2014 I ordered a Garmin Approach G8 Golf GPS on Amazon, sold by The PlayBetter Store, ($405.62 less $25 mail-in rebate to Garmin: the PlayBetter Store emailed the form to me) with a 60-day buy & try return policy. The G8 was delivered on Tuesday, May 13.Getting started: I read the basics on 3-pages of the included “Quick Start Manual”. I charged the G8 with the included USB cable and AC charger in a wall outlet. I put the G8 in a golf sock to keep clean in dirty cart cup holders.First game of golf: At the #1 tee, by myself in a cart, “Quick Start Manual” in hand, I turned on the G8 (no diagram to find the “on button” hidden on the white strip on the side). I pressed “Setup” on the screen: pressed “yards”, “English”, and “show PlaysLike Distance”. Pressed “Play” and the course appeared at the top of the list: pressed the course and the #1 hole view appeared. The G8 showed 133-yards to the green center for my blind up-hill 3rd shot on the par-5 #1 hole. A pro-shop worker near the green shouted when he saw my ball go in the cup for an eagle.Read more ›.
